Split PDF is a free online tool that splits one PDF into multiple files by page range, directly in your browser. There is no signup, no upload, and no watermark. Your PDF is processed locally on your device using two open-source libraries, pdf-lib and pdfjs-dist, and it never travels to a server.
A long PDF is often more than one document. A scanned book has chapters. A bank statement covers many months. A school packet has worksheets, an answer key, and a parent letter all in one file. Splitting that PDF into smaller files makes it easier to share, easier to archive, and easier to find.
Other common reasons to split include: pulling specific pages out of a contract for a lawyer, separating a multi-receipt PDF into one PDF per receipt, breaking a long report into chapters before emailing it, and saving just the cover page of a brochure for a slide.
You define one or more ranges. A range is a start page and an end page. Each range becomes its own output file. Ranges can overlap, can be in any order, and can be a single page. If a page belongs to more than one range, the page is included in every output that covers it.
Use the visual thumbnail grid to confirm which page belongs to which range. Each range gets a color, and every thumbnail is tinted with the color of every range it falls inside. A page in two overlapping ranges shows both colors.
Splitting and extracting sound similar but produce different results. Splitting by ranges creates multiple output files, one per range. Extracting takes a set of pages and combines them into a single new file. This tool is the splitting workflow. If you want to pull a few pages into one combined file, an extract tool is the better fit.
The tool can handle PDFs up to 100 MB. Files over 50 MB show a slow-device warning. There is no page count limit, but PDFs with more than a few hundred pages will be slower to scroll while you set up ranges. On phones, very large files may use a lot of memory while rendering thumbnails.
The tool runs in any modern browser, so the same page works the same way on every operating system. On Windows or Mac, drag a PDF from File Explorer or Finder onto the dropzone. On a Chromebook, drag from the Files app. The browser handles the rest.
